Frenkie de Jong, the Dutch midfielder of Barcelona, has sent his well wishes to his national team colleague Wout Weghorst, following the latter’s loan move to Manchester United.

The 30-year-old striker , who before this loan move was playing with Turkish side Besiktas, has joined the Red Devils on loan for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign.

The move came as a surprise to many, as the towering striker had been expected to spend the season on loan at Besiktas, but as soon as his former coach at Ajax, Erik ten Hag, expressed his interest, Weghorst was determined to secure a move to Old Trafford.

The Turkish giants received a £2.6 million compensation payment as a result of Weghorst’s move ending prematurely. If the loan deal had been registered by noon on Friday, Weghorst would have been eligible to play in United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The former Wolfsburg striker, who joined Burnley in January 2021, may make his debut for United in their upcoming match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

De Jong, who was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, took to social media to wish Weghorst well in his new move, and was joined by former Red Devil Daley Blind, who recently joined Bayern Munich from Ajax.

The move by Weghorst is also interesting because, Manchester United will face de Jong’s Barcelona in the Europa League play-off next month, and the two-legged tie will be taking place next month
