Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Bayern Leverkusen’s talented right-sided defender Jeremie Frimpong, with the player said to be keen on a return to the city where he spent his formative years as a youngster. The Dutchman has been in impressive form this season and is believed to be on the radar of a number of top European clubs, including Bayern Munich.

According to reports in Germany, Manchester United have opened talks with Frimpong’s representatives, as the club looks to bolster its defensive options ahead of next season. The 22-year-old, who joined Leverkusen in January 2021, is valued at around €50million, which could prove to be a stumbling block in any potential deal.

United manager Erik ten Hag is said to be prioritising the signing of a new centre forward and midfielder this summer, but is also keen on bringing in a right-sided defender to strengthen his squad. Frimpong’s pace and attacking flair would make him an ideal fit for United, who have struggled in that area of the pitch in recent seasons.

Frimpong began his youth career at Manchester City, but left the club without making a first-team appearance. He joined Celtic in 2019, where he enjoyed a successful spell before moving to Leverkusen.

The Netherlands international is said to be “in love” with the city of Manchester and would relish the opportunity to return to his old stomping ground.
