Manchester City are looking to build on their treble winning season as they look to strengthen their defensive line ahead of next season.

In a bid to bolster their defensive line, Manchester City has set their sights on the talented center-back Josko Gvardiol. However, their pursuit is hitting a roadblock as RB Leipzig stands firm on their asking price of over €100m (£86m) for the Croatian sensation.

Sources close to the situation reveal that Gvardiol is keen on the prospect of joining the Premier League champions, and personal terms have reportedly been agreed upon. Nevertheless, negotiations have hit a snag due to the exorbitant transfer fee being demanded. If the deal materializes at the aforementioned figure, it would shatter the existing record for the highest fee ever paid for a central defender.

While Leipzig is understandably reluctant to part ways with their prized asset, they find themselves in a position of strength as Gvardiol recently committed his long-term future to the club by signing a contract extension until 2027. This extension comes after the Croatian international was linked with a potential move to Chelsea last summer. Ultimately, the London-based club opted to secure the signatures of Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana instead.

Gvardiol, who enjoyed a breakthrough performance during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in European football. A product of Dinamo Zagreb’s esteemed youth academy, he made the move to Leipzig in 2020.

One aspect that adds to Gvardiol’s allure is his versatility, as he is equally adept at slotting in as a left-back. Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, is known to be an ardent admirer of the young defender and has identified him as a priority target for the upcoming transfer window.
