Kyrgios took to the court to explain to the spectators that he would not be able to perform.

I just want to say that I’m very upset that I won’t be able to compete today. I’ve won this tournament once before and I’m playing at a very high level now, I just wanted to come out and put on a show for you guys, show what I can do. I can’t do my best, I’m really sorry.

I will hopefully be able to continue to perform with Thanasi Kokkinakis.

I hope you won’t be too hard on me. I wanted to come out and see you guys live to say I love you guys and hopefully next year I can play singles and give it my all. I appreciate it.

In singles Kyrgios was replaced by Adrian Mannarino, who eventually defeated Gojowczyk.

In doubles, Kyrgos and Kokkinakis advanced to the second round, where they must play Gonzalo Escobar and Hunter Reese.
