Manchester United captain Harry Maguire’s dreadful error gifted Sevilla the opening goal in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final. The English center-back was given his second consecutive start by manager Erik ten Hag due to an injury crisis in defense. However, just eight minutes into the game, Maguire was robbed in possession on the edge of his own penalty area, allowing Sevilla to take the lead.

Maguire received criticism from fans and analysts alike for his costly mistake, but former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville came to his defense on Twitter.

In a tweet, Neville suggested that the blame should be shared with United goalkeeper David de Gea for his poor pass to Maguire. Despite Neville’s comments, it was clear that Maguire’s error was a significant factor in Sevilla’s early goal.

The United captain’s pass back to de Gea from out wide was intercepted by Erik Lamela, who capitalized on Maguire’s poor decision-making and immediately closed him down with two other Sevilla attackers. Maguire was left with no options and lost possession, allowing Lamela to set up the opening goal.

Manchester United will need to stage a comeback if they’re to advance into the semis of the Europa League.
