Manchester United have explored the option of signing Eric Choupo-Moting from Bayern Munich in January.
According to renowned transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano , who shared insights on today’s Debrief, the Red Devils have been kept in the loop regarding Choupo-Moting’s situation. However, direct negotiations with Bayern have yet to take place, as the German club is inclined to retain the player.
As Romano highlighted in his statement to CaughtOffside, Manchester United is currently facing a shortage of options upfront, with Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford experiencing some form struggles this season. Bringing in a seasoned player like Choupo-Moting could offer a valuable alternative off the bench.
Despite United’s interest, Romano notes that the situation is complex. Bayern Munich sees the 34-year-old as a valuable asset in a rotational role, given his experience. The striker is evidently a popular figure at the Allianz Arena, and as of now, there’s no indication of a green light for a move to Old Trafford or any other destination.
“Man United are considering multiple options – Eric Choupo-Moting is one of the names they’ve discussed,” Romano explained. “Still, Bayern are insisting on him staying at the club – he’s an experienced player, and they need some rotation, so he could be important for them. United are informed on the conditions, but at the moment Bayern is not giving any green light.”
Romano clarified that while United is interested, formal negotiations have not been initiated. The club finds itself in a delicate position, seeking reinforcements but facing resistance from Bayern in securing Choupo-Moting’s services.
With Manchester United currently positioned 7th in the standings with 32 points, the club’s fortunes must improve significantly to make a meaningful impact this season.
