The 37-year-old returned to the first team after he was removed last week from the squad that faced Chelsea due to a misconduct during their match against Tottenham.

Having endured a frustrating spell in front of goal opportunities, the 5-time Balon d’Or winner managed to netted his 701st goal following a rebound from his header.

Known not to give up in fights, Erik ten Hag applauded the Portuguese’s fighting spirit after the match. Speaking to Skysports he said.

“He kept going and the team kept going to put him in the right position,” Ten Hag said. “He kept going to get himself in the right position.

“He didn’t give up. I think that is what his whole career (is about). That’s why he is so good. In the end, he gets the reward for it.”
