Saliba has had a successful season under Mikel Arteta, establishing himself as a standout defender in the Premier League. However, a back injury he sustained during a match against Sporting Lisbon in March has slowed down his progress.

During Saliba’s absence, Arsenal’s position in the league has slipped, with Manchester City overtaking them to lead the league. This has led to worries, especially since Saliba is yet to sign a new contract, with his current deal expiring in 2024.

“We haven’t heard any evidence to suggest there’s an agreement close or in place yet for that,” Ornstein said when speaking about Saliba’s potential new contract on Rio Ferdinand’s Youtube channel Five.

The journalist then stated that the absence of Saliba has highlighted his importance to the team and this could factor into the contract negotiation. However, Arsenal will have to cope without the young defender for the time being due to his injury.
