Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t hold back in his response to Wayne Rooney’s criticism

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has hit back at former team-mate Wayne Rooney, who has been one of his critics since his return to Manchester.

Man United resigned Ronaldo from Juventus last year in a bid to hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer better chances of succeeding at Old Trafford but his return didn’t turn out the way it was initially planned.

Manchester United finished outside the top-four despite the sacking of Solskjaer in November last year and ended the season without a trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who finished as United’s highest goalscorer last season with 24 goals, has endured widespread criticism from fans, pundits and former team-mates, with many claiming Ronaldo doesn’t offer much in the Man United team.

Rooney has relentlessly urged Manchester United to part ways with Ronaldo and sign a younger striker, as he believes the Portuguese star isn’t the player he once was.

During an uncensored interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo hit back at Rooney: “I don’t know why he criticises me so badly… probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a high level.

“I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him. Which is true…”
