Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes performed brilliantly as Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 in the Qatar World Cup.

Fernandes, who provided two assists to help Portugal win Ghana 3-2 last week in their opening game, was in superb again for the Portuguese side against Uruguay.

The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder scored the opener after his initial plan to set Cristiano Ronaldo up with a cross eventually entered into the back of the net following Ronaldo’s failed attempt to make contact with the ball.

In the additional time, Portugal were awarded a penalty after a Uruguay player handled the ball inside the penalty box to obstruct Fernandes’ attack.

With Cristiano Ronaldo already being subbed off, Fernandes was the favourite to take the penalty duty. He did exactly that and made no mistake from the spot.

Following the win over Uruguay, Portugal have joined the likes of France and Brazil to qualify for the round of 16 with a game against South Korea to spare.

And Fernandes has taken to Twitter to react to his side’s victory on Monday night.

Bruno Fernandes tweeted: “Excellent game from all of us and qualification guaranteed!

“Special moment that I will remember forever when I scored in this competition.”

Portugal will face South Korea later this week in what will be their last game of the group stage.
