The bookmaker, known for being provocative, responded in confident fashion after United fell to a 2-0 defeat to Mark Hughes’ Stoke City side, extending the Red Devils’ run without a win in all competitions to seven games.

The odds which punters can now get on favorites to become United’s next manager are José Mourinho at 1.50, Ryan Giggs at 2.62 and Pep Guardiola at 11.00, at the time of writing with William Hill.

Van Gaal’s position at the Old Trafford club was under heavy pressure going into the lunchtime Boxing Day clash, and the performance his side delivered was another lacking in quality. United’s next game sees Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea side on Monday. The Blues come into the fixture off the back of a 2-2 draw with in-form Watford. A number of United’s senior players will have to greatly improve on their performances against the reigning champions.
