Wimbledon 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini has apologised for a post about LeBron James.

The 26-year-old Italian posted a photo of the basketball player in a post and signed it with two emoji: 🦍👑. As James is dark-skinned, Berrettini was accused of racism because of the gorilla emoji.

He soon deleted the post and posted an apology, “I’m sorry if my previous post offended anyone. I was notified that it could be misinterpreted, so I deleted it.

LeBron is my idol. An incredible role model and source of inspiration.”
