Benfica is said to have spurned an £88 million bid from an unnamed club for World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez, who is wanted by Liverpool and Real Madrid according to reports in Portugal.

Fernandez was instrumental in Argentina’s victory in Qatar 2022, starting every match beginning with their final group game.

During the finals, the midfielder scored one goal and assisted another, earning him the Young Player award as well as international recognition.

The Portuguese club rejected the bid in the hope that a club will pay Fernandez’s release clause of £105 million, making it the sixth-most expensive deal in history.

Despite playing as an eight for Benfica or as part of a double pivot, Enzo demonstrated at the World Cup that he can also play the role of a lone defensive midfielder. This is one of the reasons why Kloop is willing to spend big on the 21-year-old.

Fabinho has not had the best of seasons this season, and Liverpool lacks a natural replacement in the holding midfield position. Enzo is that player, and even if the Brazilian regains his form, the Argentine can play alongside him or further forward.

The main issue with this deal is that Enzo only recently switched from River Plate to Benfica. He has only been in Europe for six months and is already one of the most sought-after talents in the world.

Enzo’s performances at the World Cup have been so impressive that clubs are willing to spend big money to sign him. The defensive midfielder was named ‘Young Player of the Tournament’ at the tournament’s grand finale.

Enzo is a very special talent if his performances on the biggest stage are any indication. His ball control is excellent for his age, and he appears to be a very calm operator at the base of midfield.
