Arsenal is set to face a massive setback in their upcoming Premier League clash against title rivals Manchester City, with the absence of their center-back William Saliba. The Frenchman, who has been struggling with a back injury, has missed Arsenal’s last five Premier League games, causing the Gunners to struggle defensively in his absence.

While the severity of Saliba’s back problem has been a topic of discussion, manager Mikel Arteta has conceded that progress on his recovery has been slower than anticipated.

Although there were some hopes that the 22-year-old would recover in time for Wednesday’s crucial encounter, The Athletic report confirmed that Saliba will not be fit to play, and even worse, his season might be over.

Despite Saliba’s injury not being considered serious, the limited time remaining in the season could see Arsenal finishing the campaign without their defensive stalwart. In Saliba’s absence, Arteta has turned to Rob Holding to partner Gabriel Magalhaes, with January signing Jakub Kiwior only managing to play 14 minutes in the Premier League since Saliba’s unfortunate injury.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that their team can compensate for the loss of Saliba and continue their recent run of good form against the reigning champions.

However, the Gunners’ defensive resilience will undoubtedly be tested against Pep Guardiola’s title-chasing side, who are currently sitting at the top of the league table with a commanding lead.
