Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has revealed that Erik ten Hag, the club’s assistant coach, played a pivotal role in transforming his attacking game. According to the 25-year-old, Ten Hag’s detailed instructions have helped him overcome his perceived weaknesses in the final third, and become a genuine contender for a regular starting position.

Wan-Bissaka’s struggles in attack were a cause of concern for Ten Hag, who had shown a preference for Diogo Dalot before the World Cup. However, an injury to the Portuguese defender presented an opportunity for the Englishman to prove himself, and he seized it with both hands. Since then, Wan-Bissaka’s improvement has been noticeable, and he is now considered just as much of a threat going forward as he is defensively.

Speaking to The Telegraph in an exclusive interview, Wan-Bissaka explained how he had to re-learn his attacking instincts after transitioning from a forward to a defender. However, with Ten Hag’s guidance, he has been able to focus on his attacking game and prepare for the various crossing opportunities that arise during a game.

“You don’t expect it to happen overnight. It takes time, concentration, focus and understanding,” said Wan-Bissaka. “Growing up it was quite natural until I became a defender, so you forget a little because you are not in those areas again. So it is quite weird, you focus more on the defending side. That was the transition. Now I’m getting used to it again. It’s putting me in those positions to get used to it because there is a chance in the game when I have to be in those positions for myself or to make space for another player.”

Wan-Bissaka’s progress under Ten Hag has been remarkable, and he is now a genuine contender for a starting berth in the United lineup.
