This Russian Premier League match sees two polar opposites come head-to-head. Zenit St. Petersburg are looking to regain their title crown this season whilst lowly Krylia Sovetov are struggling to survive.

Zenit had been on an excellent run of form in the Russian Premier League up until the international break, recording four wins on the spin. However, their final match before the internationals went rather wrong as they lost away to Terek Grozny. This puts Zenit second in the Russian Premier League and three points behind top of the table Spartak Moscow.

Goals are certainly the order of the day when it comes to Zenit and they have already scored 27 goals in just 13 games this season which is an average of over two per match. Defence has been a criticism of Mirceu Lucescu’s side as they have always looked vulnerable at the back. This is demonstrated by their 10 goals conceded this season which in itself isn’t too bad, however, it is equal or just about better than most teams in mid-table.

Having said that, before their loss against Terek, the Blue, White and Navy’s won three matches without conceding. This will certainly provide encouragement to Lucescu’s team.

After impressing last season as their sturdy defence helped them survive the drop, things have gone dramatically wrong at Krylia this season and their poor form cost manager Franky Vercauteren his job – although it must be said that this was unjustified due to lack of boardroom support in the transfer market.

The Wings of the Soviets once again lack goals and this is the reason why they sit at the foot of the table, just one point from coming out of the automatic relegation spots. New Krylia manager Vadim Skripchenko faced Ural in his first game, just days after leaving them, and managed to secure a 2-2 draw at home in Samara.

That draw last time out was only the second time that Krylia have scored more than once in a game this season. Going up against Zenit is certainly a daunting prospect for Skripchenko’s team and they will just be hoping to keep the score down. However, they will take encouragement from the fact that the last two relegation-threatened sides to visit Petrovsky managed to come away with just 1-0 defeats rather than thrashings.

With betting very much in mind, the first bet to go for is ‘Zenit to Win to Nil’ which, at odds of 11/10, appears to offer incredible value. Zenit have won each of their last five home matches and have kept clean sheets in three of those. Those three shutouts came against sides of a similar calibre to Krylia. I just cannot see this goalless Samara side scoring passed this excellent Zenit team.

Secondly, ‘Zenit to Score Over 2.5 Goals’, at 6/5, is another bet worth having here. Whilst they may have only found the back of the net once against Orenburg and Tom Tomsk in recent home victories, after their loss away at Terek, Zenit will be keen to show that they have bounced back and are more than capable of putting several goals past the Krylia side.

Krylia may be half decent at the back but the fact they conceded two goals to fellow strugglers Ural shows that they can certainly have off days. I expect nothing other than Zenit to put Krylia to the sword on Sunday and am backing them to do so.
