Wycombe v Cheltenham Betting Tips: Chairboys to come out on top
Football writer Thomas Giles previews the upcoming League Two match between Wycombe Wanderers and Cheltenham Town.
These two sides have different aims in League Two this season with Wycombe Wanderers looking to get into the play-offs whilst Cheltenham Town are simply looking to stay in the Football League.
Wycombe managed to overcome relegation candidates Leyton Orient in their last match (I hope you followed my tip) which means they are now just four matches off the play-offs with a bit of momentum on their side.
As mentioned on the write-up for their match against Orient, Gareth Ainsworth’s men have been pretty good at the back this season and, after a run of a few losses, they have now kept three clean sheets in their last five matches. However, that is not to say that they are incapable of finding the back of the net and it is worth mentioning that they have scored more than once in their two most recent victories.
Unfortunately though, the Chairboys’ home form could be a sticking point for them as they have taken just two points from a possible 15 in their last five matches at Adams Park.
Cheltenham managed to stop the rot of four straight defeats last time out to record an excellent 3-1 victory over Morecambe which means they are now six points above the drop-zone. Fantastic for manager Gary Johnson who has just recovered from major heart surgery.
As you would expect from a team who could not stop losing until last weekend, defence has been a problem for The Robins and, after keeping four consecutive clean sheets a few weeks ago, they have now not kept one in their last five and conceded 10 in the process. Having said that, they still have the best Goals Against record in the bottom five. Cheltenham have managed to find their shooting boots recently with four goals in their last two following a run of four games without scoring and just 38 all season before then – the worst in the league at the time.
Wycombe may be poor at home, but Johnson’s side are poor on the road with five losses in their last six. The remainder of those six away matches was a narrow win against Leyton Orient who are struggling massively both on and off the pitch. Goals have been very hard to come by on their travels for Cheltenham with just one in their last three whilst they have also conceded an alarming 14 in their last seven – an average of two per game.
Even though the Chairboys have not been great recently, particularly at home, they are undoubtedly a better side than Cheltenham, who themselves have a dreadful away record. With this in mind, backing a home win looks a good bet at 11/10.
