These two teams managed to qualify from their respective groups at Euro 2016 and, alongside Portugal, will feel they can challenge for the top spot. However, with just the one guaranteed place up for grabs, one of those three will have to miss out – even on the play-offs.

Despite many predicting that they would struggle in Group F at Euro 2016, Hungary, along with Iceland, managed to qualify ahead of the likes of Austria and eventual tournament winners Portugal. Unlike most smaller nations, Hungary had an exciting philosophy of attacking at every opportunity rather than just sitting deep and hoping for a draw.

Although they were subsequently thrashed 4-0 by Belgium in the Round of 16, the Magyars actually put on a decent display against their superior opponents.

Manager Bernd Storck has remained loyal to his Euro 2016 squad and only injuries along with the retirements of several squad members, including tracksuit bottom wearing legend Gabor Kiraly, has stopped him calling up a set of players identical to the one he took to France.

Unlike their relatively successful European Championships, World Cup qualification has not got off to the best of starts as they could only manage a draw away at minnows Faroe Islands. This has put a real dent in their chances of qualifying for Russia in two years time – even at this early stage. However, a result against Switzerland turns that previous draw into a decent point.

The Hungarians will also take confidence from the fact that they have been good in recent home qualifiers – not losing in five.

Although the Swiss managed to get passed Group A and qualify for the Euro knockout stages for the first time, they were pretty uninspiring throughout the whole tournament – apart from Xherdan Shaqiri’s wonder goal against Poland. In all honesty, a team with so many talented players should be doing better than that.

However, they got over their Euro disappointment pretty quickly with a 2-0 win against European champions Portugal – although it must be said that Fernando Santos’s side were without Cristiano Ronaldo. Either way, the Swiss produced an excellent first half performance at St Jakob-Park which now puts them top of World Cup Qualification Group B.

A win against Hungary will really lay down a marker as they will have beaten their two main qualification rivals.

Having said that, Vladimir Petković’s side tend to only do well against minnows away from home – we can no longer class Hungary in that category after a good Euro 2016. The Swiss had a fairly simple European Championship qualification group yet lost both of the away games against the bigger teams in England and Slovenia. Plus we saw at Euro 2016 that they tend to struggle against the larger teams on away or neutral ground.

With the above in mind, I would look at backing Hungary on ‘Draw No Bet’ market at 5/4, which, all things considered, is an excellent price.

Additionally, with both of these teams better going forward than they are at the back, you could go for a more neutral bet of ‘Both Teams to Score’ at 11/10 – another worthy looking punt ahead of this fixture.
