The first Premier League match of 2017 sees Watford host Tottenham Hotspur at Vicarage Road. Both teams will be keen to start the new year on the right foot.

Watford are on a pretty poor run at the moment having won just once in their last six outings – losing four of them. Despite this, they still find themselves inside the top-10.

The Hornets used to be a team who could be relied on for goals, but it now seems they have lost that creative spark which means they are finding it difficult to put the ball in the back of the net. They have scored just once in their last three matches and only nine times in their last nine. This lack of threat in the final third puts a lot of pressure on a back-line which can be rather wobbly and one which has already conceded 30 goals in 18 games – the worst in the top half – whilst they have not kept a clean sheet since late October.

Although Walter Mazzarri’s side are facing Tottenham on Sunday, they will feel quite confident given their home form which has seen them win three of their last five at Vicarage Road.

Spurs recorded an impressive win away at Southampton on Wednesday night to stretch their winning streak to four matches. The fact they scored four was particularly good given Southampton’s excellent defensive record. Tottenham currently sit in fifth but only one point off a hotly contested fourth spot.

That win against Southampton seemed to prove that Mauricio Pochettino’s men have a really good balance to their side in that they are effective at both ends of the pitch. This season, we have associated Spurs with being a tight unit that does not concede many goals and their record of 13 against is only bettered by top-of-the-table Chelsea. However, the main concern is that they rely too much on front-man Harry Kane to score the goals but, luckily for them, Wednesday’s victory proved that others such as Dele Alli can step up to the plate on a more regular basis.

Despite being so close to the top four, Spurs’ away form has been pretty poor and, prior to that win against Southampton, Tottenham had not won in five matches on the road. However, they are a quality side and will feel they can take maximum points off Watford on Sunday.

Overall, despite that previously mentioned away record, Tottenham are a confident side right now and really should win here, especially since Watford seem out of sorts at the moment.

That victory on Wednesday seemed to leave Spurs extremely buoyant mood and they’re fancied to gain another impressive victory.  With this in mind, ‘Tottenham to Win by Two Goals or More’, which is an enhanced offer by William Hill is well worth being on, whilst ‘Tottenham Hotspur to Win and Over 1.5 Goals’ is another bet, this time at odds of 11/10, to be on.
