Walsall v Port Vale Betting Tips: Saddlers to send Vale down

19:45/Apr 25

Football writer Thomas Giles previews the upcoming League One match between Walsall and Port Vale.

Walsall are home and dry for the season but unfortunately slipped up in their play-off push a few weeks ago. Port Vale are still right in the thick of it though and, although they are in the drop-zone, they could still survive but really do need a win here.

Walsall lost last time out in an all-Midlands affair against already-relegated Coventry City which means they have now won just once in their last eight matches, causing them to drift down to 13th.

The Saddlers have had big problems going forward for most of the season and they are the seventh-lowest scorers in the league with just 50 goals in 44. Furthermore, they have only scored more than twice once in their last nine games whilst they have failed to score three in a match since 28th January. Defensively they have been pretty good and have the seventh-best record in the division with 53 against. Unfortunately though, they have only kept one clean sheet in their last seven and, given their impotent attack, this means they struggle to win matches.

Although Jon Whitney’s side have been quite poor recently, one place where they have excelled is at home with just one loss and seven wins in their last nine at Bescot Stadium, including in their most recent match against now-relegated Swindon Town. Furthermore, the Saddlers have kept four clean sheets in their last six on home soil.

Even though Port Vale lost to promotion hopefuls Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, the fact that their relegation rivals Gillingham lost to Fleetwood Town (hope you followed my tip), means that, although they are still four points from safety, they could still survive. However, given their goal difference, Port Vale must really win this match against Walsall to give themselves any realistic chance of survival going into the final round of fixtures next weekend.

Michael Brown’s men have struggled in both boxes in recent times with no goals scored in any of their last five, conceding 11 in the process. Confidence is absolutely shot at the moment and they seem to have nothing going for them at either end of the pitch.

Away form has been woeful for the Valiants throughout the course of the campaign with just nine points taken from 21 games – the second-worst record in League One. This abysmal record does not look like improving any time soon with five consecutive losses and no league win away from Vale Park since 9th October 2016 – 15 matches.

Obviously there is a lot at stake for Vale here and so they will be highly motivated. However, their confidence will be so low at the moment that a Walsall side who are so good at home can take advantage and consign Brown’s men to League Two. The pressure on the visitors could prove too much and thus backing ‘Walsall to Win’ at 7/5 is a sound option.
