As they currently sit in 12th position, Walsall fans probably aren’t overjoyed with the way things have gone this season. The Saddlers are one of many League One teams whose campaign has been blighted by inconsistency. However, they’ve looked good at home in recent weeks so, if they can put together a run of results, they’ve still got an outside chance of making the play-offs, although it is a big ask. Luckily for them, a match against relegation-bound Chesterfield is likely to yield three points and might just act as a springboard for a late surge towards the top six.

Given the visitors’ dismal form of late, or just in general this season, the hosts really ought to be coming out on top in this fixture and are worth supporting to do so. At odds of 13/10 ‘Walsall to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’ is the angle of attack.

The hosts might have lost at the weekend, but they’ve been going well at home of late, winning each of their last four at Bescot Stadium. Aside from simply winning matches on their own patch, Jon Whitney’s men are scoring plenty of goals too, finding the net 11 times in their last four. Consider this in conjunction with Chesterfield’s defensive problems this season, and it’s easy to envisage the hosts enjoying themselves in this one.

The visitors may have just about avoided defeat in their last two away fixtures, but it was business as usual for them at the weekend as they were thumped 4-0 by Oxford United in front of their own fans. Such a defeat will of course be damaging, not just in terms of league position, but in terms of confidence. Despite drawing both of their last two on the road, Chesterfield have won just one of their 17 away matches this season. They’ve found goals hard to come by and have conceded far too many at the other end.

Considering Walsall have scored plenty of goals at home recently, the fact that Chesterfield have let in two or more in ten of their 17 away matches this season should fill Walsall backers with plenty of confidence.

Along with Coventry, it’s hard to imagine Chesterfield playing their football in League One next season. On this basis, Walsall are fancied to send the visitors one step closer to relegation by handing them a sizable beating on Tuesday night.
