This League One opener sees Walsall, who nearly won promotion to the Championship last season go head-to-head with newly-promoted AFC Wimbledon. It is the Wombles first time in the third tier in their new incarnation.

This summer has seen a lot of change at Walsall with many influential players leaving the club in the likes of Tom Bradshaw, Romaine Sawyers and Jason Demetriou, however, one thing that has remained stable is the manager. Jon Whitney saw the Saddlers through the end of their campaign last season and impressed the board enough to earn the job on a permanent basis – despite not winning promotion.

Whilst Walsall have undoubtedly lost some good players, they have recruited well in signing proven goalscorer Simeon Jackson to replace Bradshaw’s goals. Additionally, they have kept true to their strategy of buying good young players before selling them on for profit in the purchase of young Cypriot winger Andreas Makris. The club have once again reiterated that the play-offs are the target for Whitney’s men this season.

AFC Wimbledon’s rise to the third tier of English football is one of football’s greatest fairy-tales and the Dons have come a long way since they held trials on Wimbledon Common to create a new team back in June 2002.

Neal Ardley’s side have done a bit of summer business but have not spent a single penny in the transfer window – perhaps somewhat concerning for the fans given the large step up into League One from League Two. However, maybe not disrupting the squad with big-money signings was the tactic. It seems to have paid off so far as in pre-season the Wombles have notched two wins in the last two and only narrowly lost to Premier League side Crystal Palace in a high-scoring affair.

There will be an interesting atmosphere at the Banks’ on Saturday as Walsall fans will look to see whether their new-look team has the same ability as last season’s crop of players. They will expect a good performance and win against newly-promoted Wimbledon who themselves have quite a lot to play for in this opening fixture.

Jon Whitney will expect nothing less than 100% from his side as he knows Ardley’s men will be well-motivated to pick up their first three points at this level. Overall I would back Walsall, who netted me a lot of winners last season, to win and you can get this at 6/5 with William Hill.

It will be interesting to see how this Wimbledon defence cope with a side who play with such flair as Walsall. Simeon Jackson is a proven poacher of goals in the Football League and I would back him to open his Saddlers account against the Dons at 5/2.
