This match sees arguably the two main candidates for top spot in Group D come together as Wales host Serbia.

Wales have proved that their excellent performance at Euro 2016 was not simply a one-off as they have started their World Cup qualification campaign relatively well with the Welsh sitting third in the table.

Chris Coleman’s side are still undefeated in their three matches so far with one win and two draws, but many point to the fact that they should have won more games. However, they drew away against Austria who had not lost a competitive home match since 2012, while their subsequent draw against Georgia, in a match they could have lost, shows the great resilience of this Welsh side.

The Dragons will feel confident going into this match against top-of-the-table Serbia, despite their opponent’s good form. Wales have a superb home record and did not lose a single home match in their Euro 2016 qualification campaign. In fact, the last time Wales lost a competitive home match was against Serbia back in September 2013.

The Welsh have a very good mix at both ends of the pitch with their three centre halves providing solidity in defence whilst they have a great threat in the attacking third in the likes of superstar Gareth Bale and Burnley’s in-form striker Sam Vokes.

Serbia missed out on Euro 2016 after a disastrous qualification campaign which saw them finish fourth in their group with just four points – even the Court of Arbitration for Sport decision to strip Serbia of three points following trouble at their match against Albania made no difference.

It seems that this failure got the Serbian’s backs up and they have started this World Cup qualification campaign excellently under new manager Slavoljub Muslin. The 63-year-old has overseen two wins and one draw in his first three matches as Serbia boss which has put his side top of Group D.

The Serbs are excellent going forward and have scored eight goals in just three matches – the joint-third best in European qualification. Additionally, they spread the goals around their team as evidenced by the fact their top scorer, Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, has scored just two goals so far. However, they are definitely question marks over their ability to defend.

Despite having a number of excellent defensive players such as Chelsea duo Nemanja Matic and Branislav Ivanovic, as well as Manchester City’s Aleksandar Kolarov, Serbia have conceded four goals in just three matches – the worst record out of all the teams who currently sit top of their qualifying groups. Muslin will have to sort the back-line out if they want to keep up their good qualifying record.

Although Serbia are group leaders, with Wales being at home and Serbia questionable at the back I’ll definitely be backing the Welsh here. I think the home side should be able to contain this Serbia attack and exploit their sieve-like defence at the other end. The odds on a Wales win are very appealing at 7/5.

As previously mentioned, Sam Vokes is in great form for club side Burnley at the moment with three goals in his last four matches. Whilst Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale gets all the attention, Vokes is a key part of the Wales team and has scored vital goals for his team in the past. I think he should be able to carry on his recent momentum into the international break and score against the Serbs.

Finally, ‘HT/FT – Draw/Wales‘, at 24/5, is another bet worth going for. With this match being so important for both teams, we could see an edgy first period, with neither team willing to expose themselves to the opposition. However, In the second 45, as the home team and with the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey going forward, I expect Wales to be a bit more adventurous and they should be capable of coming out on top.
