Villareal looking for a win
After a relatively good start to the La Liga season, and an undefeated month of January in domestic competitions, Villareal lost some momentum in recent games and are down to the sixth position, 11 points adrift of a UEFA Champions League spot.
They did qualify to the next round of the UEFA Europa League after eliminating RB Salzburg of Austria, winning 2-0 and 2-1 in the two legs. Unai Emre’s team had to show some character as they had to come from behind in the second leg. That will be a good confidence boost ahead of the important clash on Sunday.
Atletico Madrid to come out of a slump
It hasn’t been a good two weeks for Atlético Madrid as their lead in the top of the La Liga table has been cut to just three points with one game in hand. The Rojablanco also lost in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League against Chelsea.
Diego Simeone will have to regroup his team and go to the match against Villareal with the intention of winning otherwise their city rivals Real Madrid are closing in.
