Steve Johnson v Juan Martin Del Potro – Anna Chakvetadze’s Betting Tip
Steve Johnson continues his rise in the rankings and is already close to the top 20. If he has a good US Open then he could break into that bracket. In the second round he has received a ‘gift’ in Juan Martin Del Potro who is still not back in the top one hundred despite his Olympic Silver. Unfortunately for him, the Olympics do not affect a player’s ranking.
Johnson won a crazy match against Evgeny Donskoy in the first round, who himself had seven match points. I cannot imagine how one can miss seven match points, including three in a row, but clearly it can happen. The American managed to survive that third set, before nicely overcoming his Russian opponent.
I am not sure what sort of state Johnson will be in, however, with it being the beginning of the tournament, he should have had enough time to recover and is likely to be raring to go here.
Del Potro beat fellow Argentine Schwartzman in the first round but it looked a tough match. Perhaps he just was not putting in 100%, or perhaps he is still feeling the physical strain and is not 100% fit.
There may be setbacks for Del Potro in five set matches as the 27-year-old has not been involved in a five-setter recently. This is something that Johnson can take advantage of.
This isn’t an easy match to call and there is plenty of reason to think we could be in for both a tight and long match. I like the option of over 38.5 games as I think we’ll be seeing a minimum of four sets here.
