Key Stats

  • Bangladesh have won only five ODIs against South Africa, but four of those wins have come in the last eight ODIs
  • The team batting first has won nine of South Africa’s last 12 completed ODIs
  • A win for Bangladesh would seal their first ever ODI series win in South Africa

Jekyll and Hyde Proteas in first two matches?

South Africa had a bad day in the field in the first ODI as Bangladesh totalled 314/7. In the second ODI they hosts got it right as the Tigers mustered a chaseable 194/9.

The bowlers got it right on Sunday, particularly Kagiso Rabada who starred in the seven-wicket win. Rabada took a fiery Player of the Match 5/39 as South Africa won with 76 balls to spare.

Bangladesh still showed fight in defeat

At one stage in the second ODI Bangladesh were 34/5 in the 13th over. They were rescued by a battling 72 off 107 balls from Afif Hossain.

SuperSport Park in Centurion

South Africa had won eight of ten ODIs played between 2013 and 2019. But there have been two wins for Pakistan, a no result and this series’ first win for Bangladesh in the last four ODIs played there.

In each of the three most recent defeats the Proteas have allowed their opponents to get away to a storming start. Pakistan were 186/1 and 205/1 in their two victories. And Bangladesh for 104/1. Those three foundations led to totals of 274/7 (chasing), 320/7 and 314/7.

The average first innings score over the last seven completed ODIs at SuperSport Park is 257.

The Tigers hunting history

Bangladesh have never won an away ODI series in South Africa and never experienced success against a nation ranked higher in the ICC ODI Rankings. Tamim Iqbal’s team are a win away from changing all that.

The standout batter – Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock hit 62 from 41 balls to catapult South Africa’s successful chase on Sunday. It was the left-handers 45th time passed fifty, 17 times advancing to a hundred, in 128 ODIs. He’s the obvious choice to back again to top score, but there may be more value on a punt on Rassie van der Dussen.

Van der Dussen has notched six fifties in his last 12 ODIs. It’s a run of innings where has only dismissed for less than 30 twice.

De Kock is the best batsman in the team, also opens the innings and knows how to make hay in the powerplay. You pay your money and take your choice with QDK 3.00 and Rassie a more tasty 5.50.

Decision made as Shakib opts to stay in SA

Shakib Al Hasan has scored 77 and a duck in the series so far. If you back him, it’s all about his battle against Rabada with the new ball. But they’re back at Centurion where Shakib succeeded in game one and he’s worth backing again.

The last innings duck was his 12th in 220 ODIs. On ten previous occasions he has bounced back with a double figure score in the next match.

Shakib is the Rolls Royce of the Bangladesh line-up and there are few contenders to take the stake away from him to top score. He was considering taking a break during this series but opted to play. It was also announced on Monday that he would remain in South Africa to play the third ODI despite family issues in Bangladesh.

Several of his family members, including his children, are in hospital with illnesses. Shakib turns 35 on Thursday initially decided to return home, but decided to stay and play. He is likely to fly home after the game.

Liton Das worth consideration

Liton Das is worth a look. In his last nine ODIs he has scored two hundreds, two fifties and only been dismissed for less than 20 twice. The 27-year-old is a man in form and worth investing in somehow. The Trending #YourOdds price of 3.80 on Liton to hit over three fours and De Kock over four is well worth consideration.

Who wins?

Overall South Africa lead all ODIs they have played against Bangladesh 18-5 since they first met in October 2022. Four of the five Bangladesh wins have come across the last eight matches played.

Bangladesh have picked up some key victories, after losing the first seven head-to-heads. They caused an upset at the 2007 Cricket World Cup and repeated that success at the 2019 World Cup. They also won a home ODI series in 20150.

Bangladesh’s win at Centurion in the 1st ODI was impressive and makes them interesting at 5.00 to win the decider. If both sides were priced equally, South Africa would be the pick, but there is considerable value with the tourists with South Africa way too skinny at 1.17.
