This Championship match sees two teams looking to make the play-offs this season go head-to-head as Sheffield Wednesday host Birmingham City.

Sheffield Wednesday are well within the play-off hunt and currently sit in 6th position, two points ahead of 7th placed Norwich City after a run of just one defeat in their last eight Championship matches.

Defence has certainly been the strongest string to Wednesday’s bow and they have the fourth best defence in the league having conceded just 28 goals in 29 matches. Additionally, they have kept an impressive 12 clean sheets so far this season – again the fourth best in the league.

The Owls attempted to improve their strike force in the January transfer window with the acquisitions of Sam Winnall and Jordan Rhodes. Although neither of this pair have found the back of the net since arriving in Sheffield, Wednesday are improving in front of goal and have registered on the scoreboard in their last four games.

Carlos Carvalhal’s side have been pretty impressive at home this season with 28 points taken from 13 matches. Their record at Hillsborough has been sublime recently with no defeats in their last five, scoring seven and conceding just once – back on 3rd December.

New Birmingham City manager Gianfranco Zola finally secured his first win as Blues boss following a run of 10 matches without victory in all competitions – the worst for a new Blues manager since 1889. Birmingham do still hope to reach the play-offs but right now it looks unlikely. However, perhaps their recent win against Fulham will be a confidence booster.

Birmingham are attempting to play a more attractive style under Zola but, before their win against Fulham, it was not yielding goals or clean sheets yet alone results. However, the fact that the Blues managed to keep a clean sheet against a usually high-scoring Fulham side shows that the defensive steel they had under Rowett is once again coming back.

Zola’s men may not have scored many during his reign so far but they have certainly been creating chances. This win against Fulham should give the players a new lease of life in front of goal.

Of course the visitors are still yet to win away under Zola but he can hardly be blamed too much for that as Birmingham have never been that good on the road. Again, perhaps the result against Fulham will give them some momentum going into this match against Wednesday.

With Birmingham’s recent win, I would not totally discount them here although it would certainly take a brave man to back against Wednesday. Both teams have enough about them to score though, especially since the pair will both be feeling confident at the moment. Additionally, with both of these sides quite attacking in their style, a far few corners could be taken in this one. With this in mind, ‘Both Teams to Score & 3+ Corners Each’, at 11/8, is worth backing.
