Having set the pace in League One – and looked like a cert for automatic promotion in doing so – right up until Christmas, Scunthorpe have hit something of a road-block in recent weeks and are now without a win in nine matches. If Rochdale weren’t a side who’re also struggling to win games, you could say that this is a decent opportunity for the visitors to get a result.

These two teams may be out-of-form at this moment in time, but they’re still managing to produce both goals and entertaining games, and, as they now face each other, more of the same is expected.

There are two bets that stand out ahead of a fixture that really is a must win for both teams and these are: ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ and ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’.

As each week passes, Scunthorpe are seemingly finding it harder and harder to keep clean sheets. Graham Alexander’s men last shut their opposition out back in back in mid-February and are now without a clean sheet in six matches. However, scoring goals is less of a problem with Scunthorpe finding the back of the net in five of their last six, as well as in eight of their last ten. Rochdale are in something of a similar position, conceding at least once in each of their last five, but scoring in all but one of those.

In recent weeks, the visitors have been unable to avoid high-scoring matches; their last four results read 2-2, 3-3, 3-1 and 3-3. Quite clearly, Keith Hill’s side are more than capable of finding a route to goal, but keeping their opposition out is continually proving too much for them.

Considering the amount of goals leaked by these two over the last few weeks, 22 in their last ten fixtures combined, coupled with the fact that they’re both more than useful in the final third, it would be no surprise to see each of them flourish going forward but flounder defensively in this fixture.

At this stage of the season, with Scunthorpe looking to cling onto the play-off place that they currently occupy, while Rochdale try to haul themselves back into the top-six, we’re likely to see two teams having a real go here. With this in mind, alongside the fact that neither are defending well, it’s quite hard to envisage an outcome where plenty of goals haven’t been scored.

With ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ landing in 59% of both Scunthorpe and Rochdale’s League One fixtures this season, and considering recent form of both, a high-scoring game is very much fancied and, therefore, goals should be the focus for punters ahead of this one.
