Scunthorpe play host to Millwall at Glanford Park on Saturday afternoon as they bid to further cement their position at the league’s summit.

The current campaign could hardly have gone any better for Saturday’s hosts. Graham Alexander’s men lead the way in League One and have done so for the majority of the season. They’ve defended well for the most part and have scored goals with great regularity. It’s fair to say that Scunthorpe look strong favourites to make the jump up to second tier.

On the other hand, while Millwall haven’t exactly disappointed, they’ve been far more up and down than their hosts here, their tendency to conceded goals all too frequently ultimately costing them a healthier position in the table.

With betting in mind, it’s hard to ignore the hosts. Scunthorpe have been in imperious form at home this season, both in terms of winning matches and scoring goals. The latter of those two qualities is what appeals most here and, at odds of 11/8, ‘Scunthorpe to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ is the first bet to go for.

Having notched 43 goals this season, Scunthorpe are unsurprisingly the division’s top scorers. Of those 43 goals, 23 have come at Glanford Park – a total that makes The Iron League One’s joint-top scorers at home. Of their ten matches in front of a home crowd, Alexander’s side are averaging 2.30 per game, scoring at least twice on seven occasions.

If we consider Scunthorpe’s attacking prowess in conjunction with Millwall’s defensive frailties, it becomes increasingly hard to see past home goals in this one. The visitors have conceded no less than 22 goals on the road this season and are yet to keep a clean sheet. Neil Harris’ men might be useful going forward (17 away goals scored), but they’ve got clear problems at the other end. In their ten matches on the road, Millwall have conceded at least twice on seven occasions, and, in all honesty, it would hardly be surprising if this became eight on Saturday.

A secondary bet in this fixture is ‘Over 2.5 Goals’. Both of these two have been involved in plenty of high-scoring matches this season and there’s every reason to think we’ll see much of the same here.

More than two goals have been scored in 62% of Scunthorpe’s matches this season, while this stat is slightly reduced to 60% for home matches. On the other hand, at least three goals were scored in 70% of Millwall’s games overall, while this stat reaches 90% when The Lions have played on the road. Quite simply, goals are commonplace for Millwall, especially on the road.

Both of these teams have real forward quality in their midst and it’s fancied that an open, attacking game will take place on Saturday. Given Scunthorpe’s exploits on their own turf this season, they should be more than capable of hurting this Millwall back-line, while the visitors probably won’t be without chances themselves, particularly on the counter. All in all, goals are expected.
