Sunday’s League One match, Sky Sports once again showing their compassion for mothers on Mothers Day, is a play-off clash between Scunthorpe United and Bradford City. One of these sides could easily drop out the top six in their final seven games if they are not careful.

Scunthorpe were in automatic promotion contention a couple of months back but a run of just one win since 28th January and five defeats in their last six mean they have slipped right down the pecking order into 5th and are now only inside the play-offs by four points.

Where the Iron have very few problems though is in the final third and they are League One’s second-highest goalscorers with 66 goals in 39 games. They have also found the back of the net in all but one of their last eight games, despite being on a horrendous run in that time. Defensively though they have been an absolute shambles and, as well as having the second-worst defence in the top six, they have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight.

Home form has not been good for Graham Alexander’s men in recent times, however, they managed to put an end to a win-less run of four in their last match at Glanford Park by beating Rochdale 2-1 last time out. The aforementioned defence has been the problem once again at home for Scunthorpe with just one clean sheet in their last eight on home soil and a measly six over the entire season so far.

Unlike Scunthorpe, Bradford have been on a good run and are undefeated in their last seven, winning four of them. This keeps them right in the play-off mix up in fourth with a six-point cushion over play-off chasers Millwall down in 7th.

Stuart McCall’s side have been frightening going forward in recent weeks and have found the back of the net in each of their last 14 in all competitions in a run which stretches back to 17th January. This is certainly an improvement on the early part of the season but it is still worth mentioning that they are the lowest scorers in the top six at the moment. Over the course of the season, it has been the solidity at the back that has kept Bradford in the promotion mix with clean sheets in 40% of games and just 36 conceded in 39 – the joint second-best record in the league.

The Bantams have been good on the road all season with 30 points taken from 19 – only Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers in the automatic promotion spots have a better record. Furthermore, they have scored in each of their last eight matches on their travels in all competitions.

Both of these sides have been scoring goals for fun recently, but also conceding rather heavily. Therefore, ‘Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals Total’, at 11/8, looks a good bet. This bet would have won in all four of Scunthorpe’s previous matches.
