Group I has three sides in Schalke 04, Krasnodar and Nice who are all in pretty good form in their domestic leagues and so the race to finish in those top two qualifying spots is pretty tense. This makes this match between the first two all the more important, whoever loses hands the initiative back to Nice to go ahead and nick their place in the knockout rounds.

After their shocking start of five straight losses in the Bundesliga, Schalke have picked up in recent weeks and are undefeated in their last four league matches, placing them 12th in the league.

The Europa League has arguably been the catalyst to Schalke’s resurgence with the Gelsenkirchen side having a 100% record in the competition so far. Indeed it was their 3-1 victory over Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg that started their run of seven matches without loss in all competitions.

Markus Weinzierl’s side have played just one game at home in the Europa League so far (their win against Salzburg) and so the fixtures play very nicely into their hands as we go into the second half of group matches. I will be very surprised if Schalke do not emerge from Group I as winners.

In fact, Schalke’s home form has been sublime in recent weeks, winning their last three matches in all competitions by an aggregate score of 10-1.

Of course the home side are the favourites here as they are the form team. The fact that they also managed to secure all three points in Krasnodar in the last round of European fixtures has also contributed to this..

After an excellent start to the Russian Premier League season which saw many people calling them title contenders, Krasnodar have had a wobble which they have so far failed to halt. Having said that, they are undefeated in their last three matches in all competitions – so perhaps things are looking up.

You could usually rely on Krasnodar to score a few goals but, with them missing their injured poacher in Fedor Smolov, the goals have dried up a bit.

Away form has been pretty dire in the Russian Premier League and the Bulls are still yet to win away from home this season and we are already in November. Many people (including myself) see Krasnodar as a potential regular challenger to the Zenit St. Petersburg/CSKA Moscow monopoly of the Russian Premier League, however, they need to learn how to win away for that to happen.

Additionally, having found the back of the net just twice, the Green-Blacks have scored a paltry amount of goals on the road this season  – even second from bottom side Tom Tomsk have scored more away goals.

Krasnodar’s away form will be severely tested in the last three Europa League fixtures as they have to go away to Schalke on Thursday and then French Ligue 1 leaders Nice during the final round of matches. It would not surprise me if this poor away form saw them leave the Europa League at the group stage.

Realistically, Schalke should win this match pretty comfortably, not with a glut of goals, but still be rather comfortable. The bet to go with is ‘Schalke to Win -1 Handicap’.

As mentioned above, Althougnh Schalke should record a fairly routine victory in front of a home crwowd, the Russian side won’t be too expansive so an overload of goals isn’t expected. With this in mind, ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ is a nice way to play this one.

Additionally, whilst Krasnodar may not have a great away record, it is down to their play in the attacking third. There are no problems in defence with the Bulls conceding just once in their last four away matches and they should do a better job of limiting Schalke than the home side’s recent Bundesliga opponents.

Lastly, a correct score of ‘Schalke to Win 2-0’ also stands out. Having recorded a solid 1-0 in the reverse of this fixture, Schalke should be capable of going one better here. At odds of 15/2, a Schalke 2-0 win certainly doesn’t seem unlikely and is certainly worth a go here.
