It’s summer, so while the UFC schedule is heating up, boxing is cooling off before the fall and winter push. There are still several fight nights to look forward to in the coming weeks, including Ryan Garcia (22-0, 18 KOs) taking on Javier Fortuna (37-3-1-2 NCs, 26 KOs) in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 16th.

Ryan Garcia vs Javier Fortuna Preview

Ryan Garcia: 23 years old | 5’8” | 70” reach

Ryan Garcia has been a Golden Boy Promotions mainstay for several years. Garcia, a superb amateur who won numerous national titles, became a pro in 2016 at 17 years old. Garcia’s knockouts increased his reputation outside of his social media presence. In the first round, the KOs of Romero Duno and Francisco Fonseca put him up for a significant test in early 2021. Garcia overcame a brutal knockdown in the main event in Texas to drop and stop Olympic gold champion and former world title challenger Luke Campbell. It was by far his most significant win to date, and it still is. He was supposed to fight Fortuna last summer but backed out to focus on his mental health. Garcia’s November comeback against JoJo Diaz (who overcame Fortuna after Garcia withdrew) was cut short due to a hand injury. ‘Kingry’ returned to the ring this past April, defeating Emmanuel Tagoe by decision, but he didn’t exactly look fantastic even in a one-sided victory.

Javier Fortuna: 33 years old | 5’6 12” | 68.5” reach

Fortuna of the Dominican Republic is a former secondary titleholder at 130 pounds with a lot of experience facing excellent competition. He has essential victories over Mickey Roman, Cristobal Cruz, and Bryan Vazquez, although he has yet to win a major title. Fortuna was the WBA “regular” super-featherweight champion until he was stopped in 2016 by Jason Sosa, after which he won four straight fights and earned a shot at IBF lightweight champion Robert Easter Jr, whom he defeated in a split decision. Fortuna’s most acceptable win since then was a sixth-round thrashing of Antonio Lozada Jr. His only fight after his decision loss to JoJo Diaz was a “get well” victory over Rafael Hernandez in the D.R.

Ryan Garcia vs Javier Fortuna Prediction

Fortuna is a very decent boxer, but not an exceptional one. He has a reasonable work rate and can punch in combination well. We’ve also seen that he doesn’t mind a little roughhousing (if you catch my meaning), which could make Garcia uneasy at times. The issue for him is that this bout is at 140 pounds (at Fortuna’s request), and he was already undersized at 135 pounds. Fortuna has only a puncher’s chance or a “Garcia gets his tactics wrong/does something stupid” chance. Historically, Fortuna has been quite durable; thus, I believe Garcia will take his time finishing him, and he will do so by heavily hitting Fortuna’s body.

The main focus of this bout is how Garcia performs and whether he is ready to face Gervonta Davis or Devin Haney anytime soon. He requires this type of performance to distinguish himself from the Fortunas of the world.
