Possibly the weirdest international friendly you will see on the calendar this year. How either team will benefit from this is beyond me. Either way it’s happening and luckily for us there are some good prices on the market.

Russia managed a 0-0 draw away in Turkey for Stanislav Cherchesov’s first match in charge of the national team. Whilst it may not sound like the best result, the side looked more confident than they have in a long time. The new manager went with three at the back during the match in Antalya, the formation that Rostov have used with great success in the last year or so, and Russia looked generally quite solid and were good on the break but just failed to take their chances.

Cherchesov is under pressure to win his first home match against a somewhat weaker opponent in order to show the disheartened Russian public that the national team squad could drastically improve and not be embarrassed on home soil at World Cup 2018.

Ghana are nowhere near the same side that got all the way to the 2010 World Cup quarter final before losing to Uruguay under incredibly cruel circumstances.

They have achieved mixed results this year and only managed a draw against Rwanda on Saturday in the African Cup of Nations qualifier, although it must be pointed out that the Black Stars fielded a second-string side – a somewhat daft decision in a competitive match by manager Avram Grant.

Grant’s side have a couple of good players in the likes of Jordan Ayew and Christian Atsu but nothing that will make Russia quake in their boots. The Black Stars may be good against weaker opposition but I doubt they will do much against a stronger team.

The value on a Russian win is not too bad at 17/20 and is certainly worth looking at. However, I would advise ‘Russia to win by a margin of two’ at 4/1. Whilst Cherchesov will look to play entertaining football to get the fans onside in his first home match, it is a friendly and I doubt there will be too much intensity from either side. Having said that, I think it’s fair to say that this match will mean more to the Russians and thus, in front of their expectant fans, a decent win is on the cards.
