This Championship match is a Yorkshire derby as bottom of the table Rotherham United host play-off chasing Barnsley at The New York Stadium.

Rotherham have certainly been the whipping boys of the Championship this year as they sit rock bottom of the division and a massive nine points off safety.  However, they have shown they are capable of pulling off shock results, such as their recent victory over play-off hopefuls yet underachieving Norwich City, but, even at this stage, it could be too little, too late.

Being bottom of the table generally means a team is terrible at the back and this certainly applies to The Millers who have conceded an incredible 60 goals in just 27 league matches which as an average of 2.2 per game whilst, they have kept just two clean sheets this season. They have also been pretty poor going forward having found the back of the net just 27 times in as many Championship matches.

Form at The New York Stadium has been pretty good for Paul Warne’s men with three wins in their last four league matches. Teams who are complacent against the league’s bottom side can certainly be in for a shock at Rotherham.

Barnsley actually played another Yorkshire derby in their last Championship fixture against Leeds United and managed to come out on top in a thrilling affair to boost themselves up to eighth and just four points off the play-off places. This victory against Leeds means that Barnsley have now won four of their last six league matches. They are certainly a team to look out for as it would appear that they have the tools to put together a momentous run in this second half of the campaign.

The Tykes were promoted from League One last season and have certainly really gone for it in the higher division with their attacking football. Going forward they’ve excelled, scoring an impressive 46 goals – the second highest in the Championship; however, they’re not the securest at the other end having conceded 41.

Away form home, Paul Heckingbottom’s side have actually been pretty good, prior to losing their last match on the road against Fulham, the Tykes had won their last two away games and had lost just once in their last six matches on their travels.

The fact that Heckingbottom’s men experienced the atmosphere of a Yorkshire derby so recently, and came out on top, should not be underestimated. This can hold them in good stead on Saturday and I think they should be able to take three points off a struggling Rotherham side as well. Barnsley are certainly not a side who are complacent and I expect them to do a job on Rotherham, scoring a couple of goals in the process.

Taking everything into consideration, ‘Barnsley to Win’, at odds that might just prove to be a tad generous (7/5), certainly looks a good bet. At the some time, what with Rotherham’s abysmal defensive record, ‘Barnsley to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ is another selection that makes plenty of appeal.
