Group I looks quite competitive with all four sides feeling they will have a decent chance of claiming top spot, although it must be said that Schalke 04 are reasonably strong favourites.

If you count the Red Bull branding of SV Austria Salzburg as a new team then these two sides were formed in 2005 and 2008 respectively. This is certainly a battle between two extremely modern and young clubs.

Red Bull Salzburg are the Austrian champions and have got their title defence off to a relatively good start. They may sit third in the table, however, they are only two points off top spot and have not lost since opening day.

Their goal difference is also up there as one of the best in the league having scored 13 and conceded just five whilst they also have a 100% domestic home record with two wins out of two. However, they did lose their home Champions League qualifier 2-1 to Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb. This result is especially disappointing when you consider that they had the advantage of an away goal from the first leg going into that match.

Having said that, their Europa League home record over the last few seasons has been excellent and they have not lost a Europa League group stage home tie since a match against Athletic Bilbao in 2011.

With a record like that, Óscar García’s side should be taken very seriously.

Manager Oleg Kononov left his post as Krasnodar boss on Tuesday which means that the Bulls have now lost their tag as the most stable club in Russia. Although results had somewhat dipped in recent weeks, Krasnodar had made a pretty good start to the Russian Premier League season so there are no obvious reasons why Kononov would have left. It is still yet to be fully established whether the 50-year-old walked or was pushed by owner Sergey Galitsky. With former Rostov manager Kurban Berdyev currently out of managerial work, perhaps Krasnodar felt they ought to try and get the pragmatic and successful Turkmen. We shall wait and see but it all seems rather odd.

Krasnodar had a great chance of making progress in the Europa League last season but suffered a pretty embarrassing Round of 32 defeat to Sparta Prague, who then went on to be the surprise package of the competition.

This result almost typifies Krasnodar, one week they can be fantastic and the next pretty average, and we have seen that once again happen in recent weeks.

I talk about Fedor Smolov every week but it is hard not to when he is scoring for fun and to speak about him now is probably more important than most weeks. Smolov was linked with a move away from Krasnodar this summer (Lazio was the most rumoured destination) and the Russian international now has the chance to impress even more scouts and prove he can score in European competition.

It is all very well and good scoring week in week out in the Russian Premier League but scouts will only truly be interested if he can score regularly in the Europa League this season. Smolov himself will realise this and will no doubt be even more up for this game than usual.

After a shortening of odds on Smolov to score anytime in recent weeks, the rate has gone back up to 28/13, due to the opposition and competition no doubt. I would certainly take advantage of this good price if I were you.

In terms of other bets it is quite hard to call this match as we are unsure what to expect from Krasnodar. Given recent form you would say they will lose here but, as previously mentioned, they are more than capable of pulling a rabbit out the hat.

Having said that I am not sure the Russians will pick up a good result here, especially with the strange managerial change this week, so I would back Red Bull Salzburg to win but with ‘Draw No Bet’ just to be on the safe side at 5/6.

If you go by what I said above I would also go with Both Teams to Score at those same odds of 5/6.
