Real Madrid managed to break Bayern’s resolve on their own territory last time out and so go into this game as the favourites to qualify for the next round. However, underestimate the Germans at your peril.

Real recorded a narrow 3-2 win over relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon to keep hold of their lead at the top of La Liga and, with a game in hand over rivals Barcelona along with their three-point cushion, they are now favourites to claim the Spanish title.

We all know the attacking prowess of Zinedine Zidane’s side and it is no surprise that they have found the back of the net 82 times in 31 La Liga games – although even this is worse than Barcelona’s 91. Additionally, they have scored in every single match they have played this season. Defensively though, there are question marks and Real are now without a clean sheet in any of their last four games whilst they only have the fourth-best defensive record in the Spanish top flight.

The Bernabeu is one of the most iconic venues in football and Real make sure they put it to good use. The Madrid side have not lost a home match in the league or Champions League this season and, as mentioned earlier, have scored in every home game this campaign.

Last week’s loss to Madrid was a huge hammer blow to Bayern and it now means they need to score at least two goals to give themselves a chance of making the semi-finals of the Champions League. This result and next match may even have been playing on their minds at the weekend as they could only muster a 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen.

As you would expect from a side top of the Bundesliga, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have the best offensive and defensive records in the division with 71 scored and just 15 conceded in 29 games. However, they have failed to score in two of their last four matches in all competitions and kept just one clean sheet in that time. Their form is going wrong at the worst possible time of the season.

Away form has not been great for the Bavarians and they have now failed to win their last two league matches on their travels. Furthermore, they have lost two of their last four Champions League matches outside of the Allianz Arena and failed to keep a clean sheet in any of them.

Real are the favourites here and with good reason. The Bernabeu is a notoriously difficult place to go and, with Bayern’s away form looking suspect, plus their aggregate lead, can only really see one winner here. Additionally, Real have won (in 90 minutes) the last five meetings between these two sides in Madrid. At 29/20, backing the home win represents plenty of good value here.
