Two sides in relatively decent form come head-to-head here as survival hopefuls Oldham Athletic host midtable Charlton Athletic.

Oldham have managed to win three out of their last five league matches and have thus pulled themselves out of the relegation zone. Going forward has been the major problem for the Lactics for a while and their 3-2 victory against fellow relegation scrappers Coventry City was the first time they scored three goals in a league match since March 2016. With that sort of statistic, it is no surprise that Oldham are bottom of the League One goal-scoring charts with just 20 goals scored in 31 matches.

Conversely, John Sheridan’s side have been pretty good at the back and have kept the second most clean sheets of any team in the division this season with 11 whilst their record of just 33 conceded betters top of the table Sheffield United.

Home form is vitally important for any team battling for survival and Oldham have certainly made theirs count recently with three wins in their last four matches at Boundary Park. Before that, Oldham had taken just eight points from 11 home games this season.

Charlton they have not lost in their last seven in all competitions, however, they are six points away from the play-offs and showing no real sign of putting a winning run together.

Much like Oldham, Karl Robinson’s men rely a lot on their defence and their record of just 29 conceded in as many games is the third best in League One. Offensively though, they fall a bit short and have only scored more than one goal on two occasions in that recent undefeated run of seven.

Unusually, the Addicks have been almost as good away from home as they have at home with 20 points from 15 matches on their travels – compared to 21 points in 14 at Valley Parade. These away points have been accumulated quite recently as they failed to win a match on their travels in all competitions from  20th August to 22nd November.

With these two sides being defensively minded, I doubt we will see much of a thriller here. However, Oldham, who definitely have the superior back-line, can come out on top. Charlton really are looking lacklustre going forward, while the hosts will be really boosted by recent results. 8/5 on the home win is well worth a go here.
