Relegation-threatened Notts County host promotion-chasing Exeter City in what is a vital match for both clubs on Tuesday night.

New Notts County manager Kevin Nolan has revitalised the world’s oldest football club since he took the reins in early January and has led his side to two wins and a draw in his first five matches. This is particularly impressive when you consider that County had lost their last seven in all competitions and had not won since 15th November. Nolan’s side now sit 22nd in the table and have a three-point cushion between themselves and the drop-zone.

Defence has been the main problem for the Magpies this season and they have the worst Goals Against record in the league with 54 conceded in just 30 matches. They have managed to at least keep a clean sheet since Nolan’s arrival and the defence now seems a lot more organised – allowing them to pick up results.

County are not great offensively but at least they seem to be scoring enough goals to keep them out of trouble for now as they have the second best goals record in the bottom four.

Nolan has managed to turn his team’s home form around since he arrived with no losses and seven points from a possible nine.

As opposed to Nolan’s short reign so far, Exeter boss Paul Tisdale is currently the second longest-serving manager in the Football League having been at the club for over 10 years. There was a bit of unrest a few months ago with some fans even calling for change at the helm, however, Tisdale’s men had been on a barnstorming run of no defeats in their last 12 league games before losing Saturday’s Devon Derby against Plymouth Argyle. Exeter are currently 4th in the league and just four points off the automatic promotion spots.

The Grecians have been fantastic both in attack and defence this season with 48 scored and just 32 conceded in 30 league matches. Furthermore, they have kept the most clean sheets of all the League Two teams – 12.

Although they lost their last away match at the weekend, Exeter still have the best away record in the league with 31 points from 16 matches, keeping six clean sheets along the way – again the best record in the league.

Despite the revival Notts County have experienced under Nolan, I expect Exeter to be too much for them here. The visitors will be fired up after losing the derby at the weekend and can put their strong away record to good use here. At 6/5, backing Exeter to bounce back is the way to go.
