Monday’s Championship match sees automatic promotion hopefuls, and once title contenders, Newcastle United host Preston North End, whose play-off campaign has faltered badly.

Whilst Brighton have stormed to promotion with their run in the last few weeks, and look like winning the league, Newcastle have gone right off the boil with no wins in their last three. After Saturday’s results, they are now just six points ahead of 3rd place and could potentially slip into the dreaded play-off places.

The Toon Army have been pretty good in both boxes over the course of the season with 76 goals scored and just 39 conceded in 43 games – both statistics are the second-best in the league. However, recently they have lost their form in the last few games with no clean sheets in their last three (six goals conceded) and scored just three.

Although Rafa Benitez’s side have been better on their travels than at home over the course of the campaign, it has been the reverse in recent weeks with no defeats in three at home, including two wins, and no wins in four on their travels. Having said that, the fact still remains that Newcastle have struggled with teams putting in an extra 10% at St James’s Park this season.

Preston’s play-off chase has gone off the rails now with three consecutive defeats leaving them down in 11th and 15 points off the play-offs with just nine points still to play for.

Simon Grayson’s side have been good in the final third this campaign with 62 goals in 43 games – the sixth-best in the league. Additionally, they have found the back of the net in all but one of their last ten matches. Unfortunately though, the defence has been shocking in recent times and that has really been why Preston have dropped right off after conceding nine goals in their last three matches.

The Lilywhites’ away form has been absolutely abysmal for pretty much the entire calendar year so far. They have now failed to win on their travels in their last eight matches, conceding 12 in their last five. However, we have seen throughout the season that teams have put in more effort at Newcastle given the size of the club and the keenness to get a result at such a huge stadium.

Although Newcastle have been on a bad run and teams tend to do quite well at St. James’s Park, I think the home side will come through here. Preston have been dire on the road and will more than likely have their flip-flops on, as opposed to Newcastle who really have something to play for. Given Preston’s defensive woes in recent times, Newcastle really could, and probably should, fill their boots. ‘Newcastle United to Win & Over 2.5 Goals’ stands out.
