Newcastle United v Bristol City Betting Tips: Rafa’s men to prove too strong at home

Feb 23 2017

This Championship match sees two teams with completely different aims go head-to-head as title hopefuls Newcastle United face relegation scrappers Bristol City.

Newcastle leapfrogged Brighton & Hove Albion to move back to the top of the Championship table after a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Monday night (I hope you followed my tip for that!) to extend their unbeaten league run to seven.

The Toon are pretty much the mould of the perfect team at the moment and top both the goal-scoring charts and defensive statistics with 62 goals scored and just 25 conceded in 32 league matches. Additionally, they have kept three clean sheets in their last four matches.

Interestingly, Rafa Benitez’s side are actually better on the road than they are at St. James’s Park with less than 50% of their 69 points coming on home soil. However, this is mainly down to a couple of surprising defeats with Newcastle currently on a run of five wins in their last six home matches in all competitions.

Bristol City were powerless to stop free-scoring Fulham on Wednesday night (again, I hope you backed my tip there!) which means that the Robins are now sitting in a precarious 21st place and just two points above the drop-zone. There were signs of recovery a few weeks ago with no defeats in three but, with two back-to-back defeats, they are seemingly back on the wrong path.

As mentioned in my write-up for their match against Fulham, Lee Johnson’s side are certainly better in the final third than they are in defence with 42 goals scored compared to an alarming 48 conceded in just 32 matches.

Away form has been a huge part of Bristol City’s downfall in the last few months and overall they have the fourth-worst away record in the Championship with just nine points from 16 matches, winning just twice away from Ashton Gate.

Although they have been the victims of a couple of shocks at St. James’s Park this season, Newcastle now look like a team that will charge on and beat Brighton to the Championship title and there should be no slip-up here. The home side could quite easily run away with this given the visitors’ defensive woes and, therefore, ‘Newcastle United to Win and Over 2.5 Goals’, at 11/8, looks a good bet.
