Montpellier in a good position to battle for Europe
Montpellier’s great form in December continued as they had their fourth win in a row in the French Cup. After losing two back-to-back matches at the end of November, Les Paillades bounced back in style built a three-match winning streak. Those wins allowed Montpellier to push for a European spot and are looking for a win here to cement their position.
Certainly playing at Stade de la Mosson have let Montpellier bring out the best in them. To illustrate, Les Paillades gained 17 of their 28 points at home and have one defeat in their last eight home games. Moreover, coach Dal’Oglio’s team have three clean sheets in their last four home games. As a result, armored with those fine results and the fact that the hosts lost just once to Angers in 11 games, the three points seem to be in reach.
Angers can be tough when playing on the road
In contrast, Angers suffered a humiliating defeat to a fifth division team in Coupe de France. As a result, the Black and Whites have now won just two of their last ten competitive games. However, Angers might raise their confidence from their results playing on the road. To point out, Le SCO lost just two of their eight away games.
Moreover, coach Gerard Baticle’s team are undefeated in their last four trips. Along with Marseille, Angers have the second weakest attack in the League scoring 25 goals in 18 matches. On a positive note though Batice’s team were on the scoresheet in all of their nine away games this season in Ligue 1. Consequently, Angers are considered to be dangerous when playing away.
Montpellier vs Angers Prediction
This is one of the closest seasons in Ligue 1 history in terms of points difference between the teams. In fact, there are just six points separating 10th and third place. And Montpellier are right in the middle of it with 28. Hence a win here can move them closer to a top-four finish.
Angers as well, with 25 points would like to push for Europe as they are not far behind. And to do that they have to beat teams who are ahead of them on the table.
The bookies are favoring Montpellier to win and paying a generous 2.20. With La Paillades winning three in a row and in good form, that seems a very good deal.
However, we prefer a double chance combined with total goals to minimize our bet’s risk. For our total goals selection, we think under 3.5 is probable since both teams will focus on defense to avoid losing.
