MK Dons v Oldham Betting Tips: Dons to prove too good for Latics

Feb 06 2017

Two teams who are slowly pushing themselves up the table go head-to-head on Tuesday night as MK Dons host Oldham Athletic.

After a difficult first few games for new manager Robbie Neilson, MK Dons have rallied to pull themselves away from the bottom-end of the league and up to 15th after a run of no defeats in five, winning three of them. This puts The Dons seven points ahead of the relegation zone and Tuesday’s opponents Oldham Athletic.

Goals have certainly been the Dons’ strength since Neilson came in with 13 league goals in the last five matches which has boosted their ‘Goals For’ record to a respectable 39 in 28 games. However, the former Hearts manager is still yet to sort out the defence with just four clean sheets in the 13 games that the Scot has taken charge of.

Although they still have the worst home record in the division, the Dons have not lost any of their last three league matches, winning two of them, so signs of improvement are clearly visible. However, that defence is still problematic at Stadium MK having conceded in 87% of their home matches and 71% of their goals against overall coming on home turf.

Oldham are still in the relegation zone having had somewhat of a revival but they are still not able to string a consistent run together with their last five matches reading (W, L, W, L, W). They are currently one point off safety and will feel confident of survival come May.

It is incredibly strange that the Lactics find themselves in relegation trouble despite having one of the best defensive records in the league with just 30 goals conceded in 29 games whilst their clean sheet record of 11 (38% of matches) is the best in the league.

The final third has certainly been the big problem for Oldham since the start of the season and that has hardly improved since new manager John Sheridan’s arrival with his side still bottom of the scoring charts with a measly 17 in 29 matches.

The Lactics picked up a win in their last match on the road after a run of four straight away defeats but that victory will mean nothing if Oldham again slump away from Boundary Park.

MK Dons are certainly showing signs of improvement, particularly at home and I’m certainly backing them here. Even though Oldham have a more than respectable defensive record, in turn, the Dons have been brilliant going forward in the last few matches and they should be capable of overpowering the visitors on their own patch. With this in mind, ‘MK Dons to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’, at 5/4, is the bet to go for.
