These two teams have ambitions of competing in the Champions League on a regular basis as well as challenging bigger clubs in their domestic league for honours. However, such ambitions can be put on hold as the Europa League is their best chance of claiming silverware this season.

Although Lyon are on a good run at the moment with no defeats in their last five in all competitions, winning four of them, they are well off the pace in the French league and are 15 points off Nice in 3rd place.

Defence has certainly been the main problem for Bruno Genesio’s men with 32 goals conceded in 27 league games and just one clean sheet in their last six matches in all competitions. Having said that, they are excellent going forward, mostly thanks to Ligue 1’s second-top scorer Alexandre Lacazette who has scored 22 goals in the league so far this campaign.

Les Gones are in good form at home with four straight victories, scoring 20 goals in the process. However, it is well worth noting that their recent victory against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League was only their second European win at Parc Olympique Lyonnais since August 2014 – just one quarter of their matches.

Roma are still second in Serie A despite some very poor results in the last few weeks which includes two losses in their last two matches in all competitions.

Luciano Spalletti’s men have been very good in both boxes this season with 58 scored, registering in every league match in 2017, and just 25 conceded in their 27 domestic matches. Additionally, they have kept clean sheets in 41% of their Serie A matches.

The Yellow and Reds only have the fifth-best away record in Italy and lost their last away match away at Rome rivals Lazio in the Coppa Italia. However, they also thrashed Spanish side Villarreal 4-0 in their last Europa League match and have not lost a single match in Europe’s secondary competition this season.

Lyon may have had some good results recently but facing Roma is an entirely different proposition. Lyon’s poor home record in Europe could play a key part here as it shows that they struggle to cope with the pressure in the big European games. With this in mind, backing ‘AS Roma to Win’, at what looks a very generous 15/8, is the way to play this one.
