Luxembourg v France Betting Tips: Visitors to outclass minnows

19:45/Mar 25

Football writer Thomas Giles previews the upcoming World Cup qualifier between Luxembourg and France.

David meets Goliath in this World Cup qualifier as Luxembourg host next door neighbours France. There is surely only one outcome here?

Luxembourg are unsurprisingly bottom of Group A after taking just one point in their opening four World Cup qualification matches.

However, they have put up some rather valiant performances and have managed to score an impressive five goals – including three against Bulgaria and one against European giants the Netherlands. Unfortunately though, their defence is quite leaky with no clean sheets in their four matches – although they have still conceded fewer than Bulgaria who are 4th in the group.

The Red Lions have a squad of players from various relatively big teams from around Europe including Metz and St. Gallen. However, they are still not up to the standard of most on the continent.

Head coach Luc Holtz’s side have had an appalling time on home soil in recent times with six consecutive losses on the bounce, including friendlies. However, when they have won in recent years, including against Greece and Northern Ireland, these victories have come at home.

France are currently top of Group A after no defeats in their first four games, however, they will feel they should have a five-point cushion over the Netherlands, rather than a three-point one, after drawing against Belarus on matchday one.

Despite the fact they top the group, statistically, the French have not been that great, particularly going forward having scored just seven goals and four of those coming against Bulgaria. At the back they have conceded just two goals but it must be mentioned that those two came against rather weak attacks in the form of Bulgaria and Sweden.

Didier Deschamps has gone with a mix of youth and experience in his latest squad with as many as seven uncapped players along with the likes of Hugo Lloris, Blaise Matuidi and Olivier Giroud – all of whom have over 50 caps.

Les Bleus are yet to concede a goal on their travels and have lost just one World Cup qualifier outside of France since September 2008. However, none of that really seems relevant here given the stature of their opponents on Saturday.

As mentioned earlier, France are pretty much guaranteed a large victory here and so it is all about finding the right way to play it. Although the French have had a few goal-scoring problems in this World Cup qualification campaign, they should be putting these to rest against their neighbours here and, therefore, ‘France to Score Over 3.5 Goals’, at 11/10, is the bet to go for.
