Liverpool v Manchester United – a case of saving the best until last on match-day eight in the Premier League, or at least this is what fans are hoping is the case on Monday night.

Whatever way we look at this fixture, it’s a big game, between two of the biggest clubs in English football.

Previously there might not have been much to separate these two teams in terms of their style, both have traditionally played a flamboyant, forward-thinking game; however, ahead of this one there’s now a clear disparity in the way that they play. This time it’s Jurgen Klopp’s exciting, attacking Liverpool side against the polar opposite in Mourinho’s pragmatic, defensive United.

With these two styles in mind, there looks to be only one winner. From a betting point of view, Liverpool are hard to oppose. While they might not look the most astute at the back, they’ve been devastating going forward and could simply have too much for United to handle, as has been the case in many of the hosts’ matches this campaign.

There are two selections worth being on ahead of this match and these are: ‘Liverpool to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ & ‘Liverpool to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’, at evens and 6/4 respectively. Liverpool have started the current campaign in tremendous scoring form and, with 18 goals to their name, they were the league’s joint highest scorers at the start of match-day eight. Add in the fact that they’ve scored two or more goals in each of their last five league matches and it’s difficult to look past goals for the home side on Monday night.

One of the real positives about Klopp’s side this season, other than the famous gegenpress, is their variety in attack. Whether it be the creative guile and intelligence of Coutinho or Firmino, or the raw explosiveness of Sadio Mané, Liverpool really do look capable of opening teams up and it’s hard to see them not causing United serious problems.

The fact that Liverpool have scored nine goals and created no fewer than 41 goal-scoring chances in their two home matches this season goes some way to showing just how effective this team is on the front foot. OK, they may have only faced a struggling Hull side and a Leicester outfit that look a far cry from the team who lifted the Premier League trophy back in May, but they both to sword in completely convincing fashion. The same can’t exactly be said for United so far this season. Additionally, the hosts were able to showcase the exact same ruthlessness going forward when playing away at both Chelsea and Arsenal, two matches in which Liverpool scored a total of six goals.

As for the visitors, they’ve struggled to cope with teams who’re willing to get at them so far this season. Defensively they couldn’t contain a Man City side who scored twice in the opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford, while they found no answer to Watford’s forward-thinking tactics and conceded three goals there. In fact, having conceded in all but one of their league games this season, United haven’t looked anywhere near as strong at the back as you might expect a Mourinho team to and, against a high-pressing side such as Liverpool, they are fancied to struggle once more.

All things considered, Liverpool are the side to be with on Monday night and they are fancied to make their presence felt at the top of the table by picking up three points in impressive fashion.
