Saturday’s late Championship game again shows just how many big clubs there are fighting it out in England’s second tier as Leeds United take on Aston Villa.

Leeds have been on an excellent run in recent weeks with four wins in their last five league matches which has lifted them up to fifth and firmly in the play-off spots. However, their last two matches have been a mixed bag. Firstly they were incredibly poor against bottom of the table Rotherham United and were lucky to escape with a 2-1 victory before they went to Anfield in the League Cup and probably should have beaten Liverpool but ended up losing 2-0.

One of the stand out players at Liverpool was forward player Kemar Roofe who, although he missed numerous chances, looks like he has finally arrived at Leeds after struggling since his move from Oxford United.

Whilst nobody likes losing, this defeat at Liverpool may do Leeds a favour as it allows them to push on in the Championship and finally put on a promotion push which has lacked ever since they were relegated from the top flight back in 2004.

The Whites will be fairly confident going into this match against Aston Villa as they have a pretty decent record at home. Monk’s team had won four out of five matches at Elland Road before suffering defeat at the hands of table toppers Newcastle United. In fact, that loss against The Toon was the first time that Leeds had conceded more than one goal in a match on home turf since a 2-1 loss to Villa’s rivals Birmingham City back in mid-August.

However, this is a Villa team on the rise under new manager Steve Bruce. The Lions are currently unbeaten under their new boss and it so far looks like a shrewd move by the board to bring in the experienced manager. After seasons of despair, many Villa fans now believe that they can really push for a play-off place under the guidance of the former Wigan Athletic manager.

The Villains though are still yet to record two consecutive victories under Bruce and this has mainly been down to poor away form with their last victory on the road coming back in mid-October against Reading. However, Bruce will be pleased to have taken points out of the derby match against Birmingham City before travelling to in-form Brighton & Hove Albion and sharing the spoils. With this in mind, he’ll probably be happy with another point up in Yorkshire on Saturday evening.

Two in-form sides coming head-to-head often means one thing, a draw, and I would certainly look at that market here – a price of 9/4 makes plenty of appeal.

In fact, sticking with the ides that these two will come away all-square, at odds of 7/1, a 1-1 draw is well worth a go. It is worth noting that both of Villa’s last two away matches (which came against good sides like Leeds) ended one each.

Finally, if you fancy a bit more flexibility on the result then certainly look at the ‘Exact Goals’ market here and go with ‘2-3 Goals’ at 11/10. This of course allows the above-mentioned 1-1 draw whilst also giving you leeway on a victory for either side. With both of these teams on good runs, we will likely see a tight game and, although both could easily get on the score-sheet, a real high-scoring match is unlikely.
