05:40, Jul 25 2021
Italy vs Germany prediction for Sunday’s Olympic men’s basketball clash at Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo. Group B gets underway on Sunday as Italy play Germany in a very tough group that consists also of Australia and Nigeria. Read on for our free prediction and betting tips.

Italy looking in top form

Ranked 12th in the world, this is Italy’s 13th appearance in the Olympic games since they joined Fiba in 1932. The Azzurri have won two silver medals in the Olympics as their best achievement in 1980 and 2004. Italy have played nine times in the Fiba World Cup and 37 times in the Eurobasket winning the competition twice.

This will be coach Meo Sacchetti’s team’s first appearance in the Olympics since 2004. The Azzurri qualified for this year’s edition after winning their three games in the qualifications which were held earlier this month. Sacchetti’s team beat Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Serbia on the road to Tokyo and the Azzurri seem to be in top form going into the Olympics.

Italy Key Points

  • The average points scored by Italy in the qualification phase is 90 per game
  • Italy were shooting 45% field goals in the qualifications
  • 42.7% was the average shots made from the arc by Italy

Germany ambitious with their young team

Germany’s men’s basketball team is still looking for their first-ever medal in their sixth appearance in the Olympics. The German’s best international achievement came in 1993 when they won the EuroBasket for the first and only time to date. Germany also won a bronze medal in the 2002 Fiba World Cup.

Coach Henrik Rodl’s team are on a seven-match winning streak, they have won the four matches in the qualifying phase beating Brazil, Russia, Croatia, and Mexico. Germany’s best scorer was Moritz Wagner who plays with Orlando Magic with 14.3 points per game. Coach Rodl has a young side with the oldest player aged 32 and that is the captain Robin Benzing.

Germany Key Stats

  • The average points scored by Germany in the qualification phase was 78 per game.
  • The field goal made percentage by Germany was 43%
  • 30.5 % was the average shots made by Germany from the arc

Italy vs Germany Prediction

Since the end of the qualification games, Italy have bolstered their roster with Danilo Gallinari who plays for the Atlanta Hawks. Coach Sacchetti knows he has a tough task in group B every match being a must-win encounter.

The Germans don’t have a successful history in the Olympics but they are in very good form and have beaten the Italians in a friendly last June by 12 points after some incredible shooting performance making 64% of their shots from mid-range.

It will be a very tactical game with both coaches focusing heavily on their defensive strategies. In tournaments like these where a team plays just three matches to qualify to the next round, stakes are high and so are the tensions which limit the scoring chances.

The bookies are favoring Italy for a clear win with odds of 1.40 at Vbet. The total points market offers a good deal with over 157.5 at 1.78 at Vbet.
