Both Mainz and their hosts Ingolstadt were struggling somewhat before the international break, but, having had a few weeks to recharge, this pair will be looking to improve their fortunes on Sunday afternoon. With each being in poor form, both are likely to see this fixture as the perfect opportunity to turn things around.

It’s no secret that things have gone badly for Ingolstadt this season and, with just nine games to go, it looks like only a miracle can save them from the drop. However, in front of a home crowd, the performances of Maik Walpurgis’ side haven’t been all that bad of late and they can certainly remain competitive against a Mainz team who’ve conceded an awful lot of goals on the road in recent weeks.

Defensively, neither of these two are particularly sharp and thus ‘Both Teams to Score’ is the bet that catches the eye ahead of this fixture.

As they’re nine points from safety, Ingolstadt haven’t exactly fared well at home this season, but they’ve often managed to get on the score-sheet and have done so in seven of their last ten on home soil. Last time out at Audi Sportpark, the hosts proved that they have got it in them to get seriously competitive when drawing 2-2 with a Köln side who’re chasing European football. A similar performance here would surely see Walpurgis’ men do some damage.

The major problem for the home side this season has been of a defensive nature. Keeping clean sheets is something that Ingolstadt have really struggled with, shutting out their opponents in just one of their 12 home matches. The visiting side aren’t exactly great at the back themselves, but they’ve certainly got plenty about them going forward and are likely to take plenty of confidence from the host’s poor defensive stats.

The visitors are very much the sort of team who insist on playing an attacking game. Such a style is often good to watch, but, at the same time, it does leave them open at the back. Having kept just two clean sheets on the road, Martin Schmidt’s side have often been caught out, particularly on the counter. It would be a surprise if Mainz didn’t approach this fixture with attack in mind, after all they’re playing a side who’re on the verge of relegation, and so don’t be surprised if they’re once again caught on the break.

With players such as Bojan Krkić and the pacey Jhon Córdoba, Mainz should have more than enough firepower to cause the hosts plenty of damage, but they simply cannot be trusted to keep a clean sheet and, therefore, ‘Both Teams to Score’ is the bet to be on.

With just three clean sheets between them in 24 respective home and away matches, it’s hard to see either of these two walking away from this fixture having not conceded.
