Horse Racing Tips: Course specialist the one to side with at Brighton

19:35/Apr 15

Sports betting writer Bradley Gibbs gives his predictions for Saturday’s racing at Brighton.

With spring now in full flow, it’s time for flat courses around the country to reopen their gates and this Saturday it’s Brighton that returns to action. On what looks an interesting seven-race card, there aren’t loads who stand out, although, there are a couple, including a certain course specialist, in the 18:35 and 19:35 respectively, that make plenty of appeal.

18:35 Brighton – Becca Campbell @ 9/2

Eve Johnson Houghton’s filly has taken a real shine to this place, so much so that she seems to save herself for races over C&D.

The four-year-old has won each of her three races at the course and has done so in impressive style. The latest of the three, a three-length victory in a Class 6 event back in October, is probably her most noteworthy piece of form. Having tracked the field, she made smooth headway before coming through to win with real ease. Such a performance was certainly eye-catching and reaffirmed the promise of her two previous wins at this venue.

This race might be a slight step up in grade, but it’s certainly not the strongest Class 5 in the world and, therefore, won’t take much winning. As a horse who clearly thrives when running here, and with a speed rating over this trip that is just about the best on offer, Becca Campbell shouldn’t be far away.

Having performed with credit after a similar break last term, the fact that this filly has been off the track since October 2016 isn’t too much of a worry, while her trainer has been known to saddle a winner or two around these parts.

In what really isn’t the strongest field, Becca Campbell appears to have standout credentials and would be a worthy favourite, a fairly short-priced one at that, so the 9/2 available in the early betting is well worth snapping up.

19:35 Brighton – Panther Patrol @ 7/2

In the lucky last, it’s another Eve Johnson Houghton runner that catches the eye. Panther Patrol is a horse who hasn’t done much winning in recent times, but has subsequently dropped to an appealing mark and drops into what looks like a very winnable contest.

It’s now been 16 runs since this seven-year-old got his head in front, but his mark has tumbled tremendously and this race really does appear to be his best chance for some time. His two previous visits to Brighton, which yielded a win and a 2nd place finish, bode well, while he’s proven at a much higher level than this.

Of the others, the Tony Carroll pair both warrant respect but it’s hard to get excited about either in all honesty. Essaka is a horse who likes this venue but doesn’t exactly boast the best record when going fresh, nor has he ever beaten anything other than very poor horses around here. Beau Mistral probably has a better chance, but it’s hard to see how she justifies a price as short as the one quoted in the early betting, especially since she’s 3lb higher than her last winning mark.

This is the sort of race, where all of the entrants are weighed up on their best form, form from some way back at that, and it could come down to who retains more ability. Quite frankly, Panther Patrol has been keeping the better company of late and is the best animal at this moment in time.

Eve Johnson Houghton’s gelding is fit from a few spins in stronger races on the all-weather and really ought to be running a big race. At the prices, the top-weighted runner is definitely the one to side with.
