This Champions League qualifying match sees Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva host Hungarian side Budapest Honved.

Hapoel are very much the new kids on the block in Israeli football and, after their first title win since 1976 in 2016, they won another successive Israeli title in 2017.  Additionally, they managed to qualify for the Europa League knockout rounds last season before being knocked out by Besiktas.

Just like their title-winning campaign of 2015/16, The Camels’ success last season was based on defensive solidity with just 18 goals conceded in 36 league matches over the course of the campaign. However, they were also very potent in their offence and, in the last ten league games of the season, they found the back of the net 19 times – an average of almost two goals per game.

Barak Bakhar has overseen the turnaround over the last couple of years at Be’er Sheva and home form has been a huge part of that. Since Barkhar took over at the start of the 2015/16 season, his team have lost just one league match on home soil, and even that came in his very first home league game in charge – 30th August 2015. Furthermore, they lost just two European home games last season, including qualifiers.

Honved returned to the big time last season as they won the Hungarian league for the first time since 1993. Honved were arguably the best side in Europe in 1950’s with many of the great Hungarian national side playing for them, including the legendary Ferenc Puskas, and hopefully this new generation of players can bring back the glory days to this historic club.

Interestingly, Erik van der Meer’s side did not top the statistic charts in either Goals Scored or Goals Conceded last season. However, 55 for and 30 against is still a decent record. There were plenty of goals in Honved’s last five games of the 2016/17 season (18), including two occasions in which Honved found the back of the net five times. Both teams scored in three of those five matches.

Those two matches where Honved scored five goals both came on their travels and, overall, the champions were decent on the road with an average of 1.59 points taken per game. Additionally, 53% of Honved’s total goals last season came away from the Bozsik Stadium. However, they have not played a European away tie since 2013 and have not played a Champions League match since losing to Manchester United in 1994. The Hungarians may find it hard to cope with the difference in style of play and the travel time to Israel.

Unsurprisingly, Hapoel are the big favourites here. However, I think Honved could make it difficult for them on Wednesday with their potent attack, in spite of Hapoel’s good defence. Both Teams to Score looks good value at 11/8.
